On Tuesday, John Lyttle, managing director of fashion, home and beauty at M&S, said a selection of the retailer's "best selling" fashion ranges would now be available online.

The company has told the BBC that the email was not sent from its system and that it has nothing to do with the breach at M&S.

Problems at M&S began over the Easter weekend when customers reported problems with Click & Collect and contactless payments in stores.

In a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes situation at M&S, Greencore chief executive Dalton Philips said: "In the absence of having all the systems speaking to each other, you revert to how it was 25 years ago."

However, Thea Green, chief executive of beauty brand Nails Inc, told the BBC her company had a major launch coming up and she was nervous about it, given the problems at M&S.
