Earlier this month, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's official visit saw her stand side-by-side with her Greenlandic counterpart Jens-Frederik Nielsen and his predecessor, Mute Egede.

The former leader insisted Greenland was not for sale, but added the island wanted trade with the US, Greenlandic national newspaper Sermitsiaq reported.

Greenland's new prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, said prior to Vance's visit that it showed "a lack of respect for the Greenlandic people".

"I actually think it is very positive that the Americans are cancelling their visit to the Greenlandic community. Then they will instead make a visit to their own base, Pituffik, and we have nothing against that," he said.

Vance is set to visit Greenland from Thursday through Saturday to watch the island's national dogsled race and "celebrate Greenlandic culture and unity," the White House told CNN in a statement.
