Baking soda and washing soda are made up of the same chemical components, but are different substances. Washing soda is a form of sodium carbonate, Na2CO3⋅102O, and is used for applications such as cleaning, bleaching, and soap manufacture. Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO3, made through the reaction of sodium carbonate and carbon dioxide. Among other things, baking soda is used in baking as a leavening agent and also in medicine as an antacid.
