2,4,5-T

In 1969, evidence linked a chemical in Agent Orange, 2,4,5-T, to birth defects and stillbirths in mice because it contained TCDD, a particularly harmful dioxin.

Some herbicides developed during the 1940s such as 2,4,5-T, a major ingredient in Agent Orange, were later banned because of their toxicity.

The most widely used herbicides are 2,4-D, 2,4,5-T, and related members of what is known as the phenol group.

At the time the Silvex program began on San Carlos, another field trial was getting underway on the other side of the world — this one for Agent Orange, a hybrid containing the same hazardous compounds, 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T, sprayed at San Carlos.
