A.E.F.

Appendix A lists notable Oxford writers from 1829 to 1929; another gives the names of A.E.F. soldier-students at British universities in 1919.

Appearing first in the Army’s newspaper “Stars and Stripes,” the poem was published in 1919 with 83 others by American Doughboys in “Yanks; A.E.F. Verse.”

After crossing the Atlantic on La Touraine, a vessel carrying the volunteer ambulance corps of several East Coast colleges, the two settled in a pension on Rue Vaneau, convenient to both A.E.F. headquarters and the Alliance Française.

“I wish that every officer and soldier of the A.E.F. would write a letter home on Mother’s Day,” Pershing declared.

Pershing dove back into his career; he chased Pancho Villa with the Mexican Punitive Expedition a year later and took command of the A.E.F. in 1917.
