Atabrine

During the fight for the Pacific island of Guadalcanal, Marines rejected Atabrine.

He soon discovered that, because the Japanese had the market cornered on quinine, the United States was using Atabrine to ward off effects of malaria.

Prior to the 1960s a number of drugs, such as Atabrine and chloroquine, had been developed that effectively treated this illness.

“And I’m sorry about making such a fuss about those Atabrine tablets on the way over. If you want to catch malaria, I guess it’s your business, isn’t it?”

Speaking of horses makes me remember the Atabrine pills we had to take to keep from getting malaria.
