Avalokitesvara

Tibetan Buddhists consider their exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, to be an incarnation of Avalokitesvara, a Bodhisattva of compassion.

In another temple we found the Lamas holding service in worship of the many-handed Buddha, Avalokitesvara.

Probably it refers to the legendary birth of their chief saint, Avalokitesvara, who is said to have been born of a lotus flower.

Avalokitesvara,21 the Lord of View or All-sided One, is the personification of power, the merciful protector and preserver of the world and of men.

He pointed to a figure resting upon a triple golden lotos,—Avalokitesvara: she "who looketh down above the sound of prayer."
