Political tensions persist in the Balkans, "but the cultural connections seem to have trumped the political divisions", Dean Vuletic, author of Postwar Europe and the Eurovision Song Contest, recently told the AFP news agency.

The BBC has previously reported that the proposals are focused on countries in the western Balkans – a region which includes Albania, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The government is looking at plans for failed asylum seekers whose appeals have been exhausted to possibly be sent to the Balkans.

Failed asylum seekers could be sent to the Balkans under plans being considered by the government.

Colonel Phillips, who served 33 years in Army including in Iraq, Afghanistan, Northern Ireland and the Balkans, was appointed Wales' first veterans commissioner in 2022 by the previous Conservative UK government.
