Biko

Steve Biko, the leading Black Consciousness campaigner who later died after being beaten by the South African security services, said Buthelezi was being exploited by the apartheid regime and not - as the Inkatha leader believed - working within the system to undermine it.

Mr. Haigh was soon making contacts with Black activists, including Steve Biko.

Under police orders, Biko was restricted from leaving King William’s Town.

Biko gave Mr. Haigh access to the inner leadership of the apartheid fight.

Yet within a year, Biko was dead — arrested in August 1977 and killed in custody the next month.
