There have been multiple negligence lawsuits stemming from the tragedy, including by others who witnessed the shooting as they gathered in a wooden church at Bonanza Creek Ranch.

On the day of the shooting, Hutchins, Baldwin, Souza and about a dozen other crew members were gathered in an old wooden church at Bonanza Creek Ranch, south of Santa Fe, preparing for a scene.

Production managers handled logistics, including hiring Gutierrez and inexperienced prop master Sarah Zachry — just days before pre-production on “Rust” began at Bonanza Creek Ranch, a well-known movie location near Santa Fe.

Moments before the shooting, Souza entered the wooden church on the movie set at Bonanza Creek Ranch and moved in behind Hutchins, who had been discussing Baldwin’s next scene.
