"Senators in the Philippines are very sensitive to national public opinion, because they imagine themselves as vice presidents or presidents in-waiting," says Cleve Arguelles, a political scientist who runs WR Numero Research, which monitors public opinion.

Cleve Mesidor, executive director of Blockchain Foundation, a nonprofit working to educate the public about the crypto industry, said legislation to provide a governing framework for stablecoins is likely to see support this year.

“This election is pivotal because it's not just the fact that you now have two presidential candidates who are looking at this whole web3/DeFi conversation from a U.S. competitiveness space, so we're going to have a reset regardless of who wins the presidency,” said Cleve Mesidor, founder of the National Policy Network of Women of Color in Blockchain and executive director of the Blockchain Foundation.

"Politics in the Philippines is very much a moral exercise. Therefore, voters look to their religious leaders for guidance," political scientist Cleve Arguelles told BBC News.
