Last week a comma butterfly, fresh from hibernation, guarded my house for three sunny days.

The comma butterfly was in severe decline in the 20th Century and had become restricted to south east England and parts of the Welsh borders.

And some species really moved—the comma butterfly has shifted 137 miles north in just two decades.
