It has now been backed by wind farm firm CWP Energy with the trust working to secure the public element of the costs which have risen steadily from an early estimate of £4m.

Rod Wood, managing director at CWP Energy, said the company was proud to be playing a part in seeing the landmark built.

Forrest said in a statement Squadron had acquired CWP Renewables, owner of 1.1 gigawatts of wind farms and a development pipeline of 1.3 GW of wind and solar farms in Australia, but did not disclose the price.

With CWP Renewables, Squadron would have the scale it needs in eastern Australia to meet demand from large commercial and industrial customers for reliable green energy, Forrest said.

InterContinental Energy and CWP Global have been working on the project since 2014.
