Meanwhile, the RSF has been besieging the capital of North Darfur, el-Fasher, which is defended by a coalition of Darfurian former rebels, known as the Joint Forces, allied with the army.

United Nations trucks carrying aid for the war-torn Sudanese region of North Darfur have been attacked, with initial reports of "multiple casualties", a spokesperson for the organisation has said.

The South Darfur airport in Nyala, the presumptive capital and military base of the Rapid Support Forces, has been repeatedly bombed by the SAF, which destroyed an aircraft there earlier this month.

El-Fasher is the last city in Sudan's western region of Darfur under the control of the army and its allies.

Two decades of conflict in the Darfur region, which intensified after civil war broke out across the whole of Sudan two years ago, meant they had already fled their homes to find safety and shelter.
