This time last year, a typical household bill, including EPG, with SSE Airtricity, which supplies homes in Greater Belfast, was £985.80.

For Firmus gas customers in the Ten Towns area, a typical household annual bill, including EPG, was £1,743.32 last year and has now fallen to £1,363.32 this year.

The majority of customers will see the tariffs charged by their supplier frozen or cut but the withdrawal of the EPG support will mean that their bills actually increase.

The EPG will drop from about £454 a year in discount for the average household to nothing from 1 July 2023.

The EPG required suppliers to apply a discount to the price of each unit of gas or electricity to protect consumers from soaring prices after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
