Tomatoes, with their simple botanical structure and humble price tag, aren’t generally considered a luxury in the same manner as, say, the $19 Erewhon strawberry.

Patrick Oatman, a model and economics major at the University of Connecticut, was genuinely impressed when he dropped by Erewhon last June.

Tubs containing pills made up of these fungi are on the shelves of Whole Foods and Sprouts stores across the country and in the supplement aisles of Erewhon across Los Angeles County.

Plans for the new store come as other grocers eye expansion in Southern California this year, including Aldi, Trader Joe’s and Erewhon.
