To end the fighting, French authorities agreed to put New Caledonia on a pathway to independence.

At one point during the fighting, French general Joseph-Simon Gallieni commandeered 2,000 Paris taxicabs, which rushed thousands of French reinforcements to the frontlines.

The comments amounted to “inadmissible interference” in Algeria’s affairs and were “an intolerable affront” to Algerians who died fighting French colonialism, the Algerian presidency said.

Both groups have been fighting French troops in Mali for more than a year, trying to establish an Islamic caliphate in the country.
