FYROM

At the UN, its neighbour became known simply as Fyrom, an acronym for the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and attempts to resolve the matter foundered for decades.

So the country’s official name was the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, or FYROM.

And while most of the world came to recognize the state of Macedonia, Greece only agreed to call it the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, or Fyrom.

He stipulated that only the name “Fyrom” be uttered in his office.

Greece, before this vote, referred to its northern neighbor as the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, or FYROM.
