At the Tour of Austria in July, Norwegian cyclist Andre Drege, 25, was fatally injured in a crash on the descent of the Grossglockner, Austria's highest mountain.

Also on Sunday, a 33-year-old police officer died in an avalanche in the southern Carinthia region on the Grossglockner peak.

The biathletes rise at 5 a.m., bike for four hours to Grossglockner — Austria’s highest mountain — and spend 90 minutes going uphill on roller skis.

The 48-year-old was flying back from a mountain hut in the Grossglockner area of Carinthia, in eastern Austria, when his helicopter struck a cliff late Thursday.
