In texts Bowen sent after he assaulted the migrant, he referred to the victim as a “guat” and dismissed the incident as all but a nonevent, suggesting the only reason it had resulted in any action was because it was caught on a camera belonging to the patrol’s parent organization, Customs and Border Protection.

The day after the encounter, Mr. Bowen sent a message to another Border Patrol agent describing what happened: “I used an fl 50 to do a human pit maneuver on a guat running from an agent.”

Records show one of three charged with murder told officers they had gone out "Guat hunting" that night, and police have described it as a hate crime.

In Singapore, police spokeswoman Chu Guat Chiew said authorities there are reviewing the information submitted by the Italians before deciding what to do, adding: "So far, Dan Tan Seet Eng has not been charged with any offence in Singapore."
