Dumezweni says she has observed some pushback from fans of the book about the changes, an experience she understands from playing Hermione Granger in “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” when it opened in the West End.

They join a crop of other names on the show's growing cast list including the child actors who will play Harry, Hermione and Ron, as well as John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Hagrid and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.

Now 37, he will become the first member of the cast to join the stage show, which takes place 19 years after the end of the original story, with Harry, Ron and Hermione, as well as Draco, all sending their own children to Hogwarts.

When the cast was announced for the films back in the early 2000s, I remember feeling a pang of jealousy – Emma Watson was fine, but wasn't I the real Hermione Granger?

For three young actors - Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout - that fantasy has become a reality after they were cast as Harry, Hermione and Ron in HBO's forthcoming Harry Potter TV adaptation.
