Icelanders and their government are united in offering help.

Living in a country that straddles two tectonic plates and has 130 or so volcanoes, Icelanders are no strangers to earthquakes and eruptions.

With these shaky warnings, Icelanders were girding for the eruption that came Monday night.

Volcanic activity in the area continued for six months that year, prompting thousands of Icelanders and tourists to visit the scene.

Iceland said on Monday night it had flown out 126 Icelanders, five Faroese, four Norwegians and 12 Germans who had been stranded in Israel from Amman, Jordan, on a government-sponsored plane.
