A council spokeswoman said the authority recognised the "significant impact" the industrial action had on people and it was grateful to community groups who were working to clear waste.

"This, along with the industrial action happening at the same time, has had a huge impact on our school," said the head teacher.

With the possibility of another round of industrial action looming, the vote is being billed as the biggest single vote by the profession ever launched in the UK.

The union said that if there is no successful resolution to the disputes in the coming days, it will move towards holding votes on industrial action within two weeks.

Unite said some Swissport staff are "struggling with chronic fatigue", and walkouts could be held from the middle of July, should members vote for industrial action.
