Should I inquire after my gift or just let this disappear into the ether, knowing that I helped someone I care about?

How can one write to a colleague of nearly a decade, for the first time since their departure for medical reasons, and not politely inquire after their health?

“How is your niece, Miss Bates?—I want to inquire after you all, but particularly your niece. How is Miss Fairfax?—I hope she caught no cold last night. How is she to-day? Tell me how Miss Fairfax is.”

There is no publicity associated with them, and no one mentioned in the files is notified — the group’s philosophy is that the choice should be the victim’s, to inquire after their file or not.

At one point, she went to police stations to inquire after the missing citizen journalists.
