Most of India's apples come from two regions in the north of the country -Jammu and Kashmir and neighbouring Himachal Pradesh.

"The idea is completely infeasible, a dead end. For decades, Indian maps have shown the entire territory of the erstwhile princely state of Jammu and Kashmir as part of India," Sumantra Bose told the BBC.

Delhi's position on Kashmir has hardened, especially after it withdrew the special status of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019, triggering widespread protests in Kashmir.

Religion is one factor: Jammu and Kashmir is more than 60% Muslim, making it the only part of India where Muslims are in the majority.

In an impassioned speech in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly on Monday, the state's chief minister and tourism minister Omar Abdullah paid tributes to the victims by reading out names of all the 26 people.
