Jozi De Leon, the university’s new vice president for diversity and inclusion, said there are numerous initiatives to attract a more diverse student body and faculty, and create a more welcoming campus climate.

Jozi FM head Mpho Mhlongo, who confirmed the star's death, noted that Mr Hlatshwayo's father was also killed some years ago during a robbery.

Many are using social media to send message of condolences to the family of Mr Hlatshwayo, who was also a disc jockey for local radio station Jozi FM.

The university’s diversity council and Jozi de Leon, its vice-president for equity and inclusion, are taking steps to work with the concerned students.

“Jozi is vibrant, this body of work tells us that it’s not always ugly,” Kaminju says.
