In two cases where patients took their own lives inquests concluded records had been altered after their deaths.

Mr Foster said: "My aim is to deliver change that the Windrush generations can see and feel in their everyday lives, particularly in how the Windrush status and compensation schemes operate."

Today, that legacy lives on in the hands of a different community, facing different threats but wielding the same tools.

"There are people who that has never touched their lives and so it is perhaps a little bit more difficult for them to appreciate the challenges."
