A map of the conflict zone published by the national security council on Friday showed that government forces were attacking Makeyevka, a city just outside of Donetsk, and advancing toward the rebel-controlled border with Russia in the Luhansk region.

Boris Dekhteryenko, an auto mechanic from Makeyevka, told me he missed the good old days.

“Federalization means that Kiev listens to us,” Boris Dekhteryenko, a car mechanic from Makeyevka, explained to me. “We want independence within Russia.”
