Mercado González in Costa Mesa is the first Mexican-style mercado of its kind in Southern California — and a sign of one city’s shifting politics.

Some of the shells peppered throughout the garden come from Horvitz’s beachcombing excursions, others are from oyster tasting parties held in the garden, but most were collected from local restaurants such as Michelin-starred Mexican seafood restaurant Holbox in South L.A.’s Mercado de Paloma.

Tabsch is also a filmmaker who co-directed “Mucho Mucho Amor: The Legend of Walter Mercado,” which premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.
