When Sting was born Gordon Sumner in 1951, the son of a milkman and a hairdresser, the North East still had a proud tradition of shipbuilding.

He was found with his hands tied and bound to the steering wheel of his car by a milkman at Lambley Playing Fields in Gedling.

The dedicated dairyman, who works in Basildon, said he used to help his local milkman as a child after being interested in the "community feel" of the job.

As he starts his work, the vet is caught in the tumultuous politics of change and faces challenges from a private dairy owner, the village head and a volatile local milkman.
