Mistress of the Robes

Some official and perhaps dated titles have largely stuck over centuries, too — including the lady-in-waiting title of “Woman of the Bedchamber,” who helped the queen dress, and the “Mistress of the Robes,” tasked with looking after the queen’s wardrobe and jewelry.

The Mistress of the Robes, often a duchess, is responsible for the schedule and duties of her fellow ladies-in-waiting.

The outlet noted that the queen’s Mistress of the Robes served from 1967 until her death on Dec. 3 at age 101.

The duchess was Mistress of the Robes whenever the Whig party were in power but the queen refused to part from her when the Tories were elected, causing the party to fall.

"She drinks one glass and shares the rest with the make-up ladies," says Goodwin of an actress whose casting as Victoria's Mistress of the Robes follows her role as Olenna Tyrell in HBO's Game of Thrones.
