Freed from the tyrannical control that his father Murry had exerted over The Beach Boys’ direction as their manager, Wilson made a self-conscious stab at greatness.

“He was very clever and quick. I just fell in love with him,” Murry Wilson says in Peter Carlin’s “Catch a Wave: The Rise, Fall and Redemption of the Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson.”

When Murry Wilson returned home, he was more pleased than angered and encouraged the fledgling musicians to continue.

His father, Murry, was a musician and a machinist; his mother, Audree, a homemaker.

When the Beach Boys became successful, Murry took over as their manager and increasingly took charge of their business affairs.
