Social justice charity Nacro warned the data shows the need for "adequate investment in housing" as the government seeks to reduce the numbers of offenders in prisons.

Around one in three prisoners are released on a Friday, according to research by the charity Nacro.

Nacro has run a long campaign to stop Friday releases, saying they are "setting people up to fail".

The lack of interventions for prisoners approaching their release date has already had an impact, according to social-justice charity Nacro.
