They were among staff working at the Chinese-owned Macrolink copper mine in Ndola city, near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

She survives him, as does their son, who has helped preserve Mr. Brathwaite’s work as head of the Kwame Brathwaite Archive; a daughter, Ndola Carlest; a brother; and four grandchildren.

The eight pleaded not guilty before magistrate David Makalichi in Ndola, Copperbelt province.

The case is expected to continue before the Ndola court, with another hearing on Thursday.

Residents in the capital Lusaka as well as Kitwe and Ndola in the copper belt said they were without power.
