Ninety-Five Theses

Eisenstein recounts the viral dissemination of Luther’s Ninety-five Theses in some detail.

The Souls had become so familiar with some of them that she had to ask only, "������ did Martin Luther..." before four hands shot up in the air and four voices would shout out, "The Ninety-five Theses."

In 1517, Martin Luther published his Ninety-five Theses, which inaugurated a massive schism in the Western church, one that he likely never intended.

In it, she calls for a sexual reformation within Christianity, modelled on the arguments of Martin Luther, the theologian who launched the Protestant Reformation by nailing ninety-five theses to a church door in Wittenberg, Germany, in the sixteenth century.

Luther did not address the issue of freedom of conscience in his Ninety-Five Theses, nor did he ever devise a political theory supporting religious pluralism.
