In the 1970s and 80s, Noraid and other US-based republican front groups provided cash and encouragement to a brutal campaign that made Sinn Féin toxic to Irish voters.

In the 1980s, King was closely linked to the nationalist fundraising group Noraid and famously proclaimed: “If civilians are killed in an attack on a military installation it is certainly regrettable, but I will not morally blame the IRA for it.”

King himself had close links to Noraid and often spoke at the group's protests in the 1980s.
