His missionary campaign led to the establishment of the British Central African Protectorate, which later became Nyasaland.

The Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland was dissolved at the end of 1963 and, a month later, Kaunda was elected prime minister of Northern Rhodesia.

The same goes for Malawi, which until independence was known and called Nyasaland.

In 1964, he led the Nigerian parliamentary delegation to a London conference about how to restructure the then-British colonies of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, now Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi.

It was thought that he was encouraging civil disorder in the country formerly known as Nyasaland, the files show.
