Last week, the L.A.-based law firm Munger, Tolles & Olson filed a federal court brief denouncing Trump’s targeting of Perkins Coie — which numbered Hillary Clinton among past clients — and other legal firms facing wrongful retribution for, among other things, holding the Jan. 6 rioters to account.

The Times reported in February that the DWP approved a three-year, $10-million contract with the law firm Munger, Tolles & Olson to defend the utility against the growing number of lawsuits.

Stephen Olson, a former US trade negotiator, said Xi's comments were "a very shrewd tactical move".

Mr Olson said he expects Beijing to have a "forceful" response with tariffs and other measures making it more difficult for US companies to operate in China.

"Ultimately, the US and China are headed for a negotiating table where they'll try to reach some type of a grand bargain on a wide range of issues," Mr Olson said.
