Peneios

Daphne, the daughter of Peneios, a fisherman, and Gaea, his wife, lives in a hut on a riverbank.

Peneios is also, it would seem, the river god; Gaea, the earth goddess.

Ain Anger’s mellow, booming bass voice perfectly suited Peneios.

One day she was roaming along the winding banks of Peneios, when a lion sprang from a thicket across her path.

Then, with a wild cry, she said, "Father Peneios, receive thy child," and she rushed into the stream, whose waters closed gently over her.
