Arizona will continue to use midazolam in a three-drug combination if it cannot acquire the preferred Pentobarbital or Sodium Pentothal,​ but the state has not scheduled any executions scheduled for this year.

Instead, it will try to obtain pentobarbital or Sodium Pentothal, the powerful sedative also known as sodium thiopental that was used in lethal injections in Arizona until it became difficult to obtain.

The company said it has no other option for Pentothal after the Italian government's conditions on production and distribution.

Ohio and Washington state recently switched to using only sodium thiopental, which is also known as Pentothal.
