Schuylkill saw its first action on the Ides of March, when 30 American toads and an unusual number of pickerel frogs made a showing.

The Michigan Natural Resources Commission agreed last week to place the mudpuppy, Fowler’s toad, pickerel frog, Butler’s garter snake and smooth green snake on the list.

In past excursions, Bright photographed bristly crayfish eating a salamander, dining on a dead bat and even devouring a pickerel frog.

At dusk the call of the whippoorwill mingles with the chorus of the pickerel frogs, and in the morning I hear through the robins' cheerful burst the sombre plaint of the mourning-dove.
