“People are worried about the threat of deportation … but also about losing whatever job they have and being unable to secure other work,” said Aquilina Soriano Versoza, director of the Pilipino Workers Center, who estimated that roughly half of her advocacy group’s members are undocumented.

Several weeks ago I reached out to the Pilipino Workers Center, a Los Angeles nonprofit that has been educating domestic workers on their rights and leading a fight against a system in which labor laws are often ignored and workers — many of them old enough to be receiving elder care themselves — are cheated and exploited.

I’ve met some caregivers who, in their off time, volunteer for various organizing activities at the Pilipino Workers Center.

“It definitely shows that there is a strong progressive voice that’s coming from the Filipino community,” said Aquilina Soriano Versoza, executive director of the Pilipino Workers Center of Southern California.
