Consulate General Guadalajara warned that the victims of such schemes were kidnapped in Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Nayarit areas in recent months, according to a news release.

The Mexican state of Jalisco, which includes the city of Puerto Vallarta, has been classified as “Level 3: Reconsider Travel” due to kidnappings and crime.

The state capital, Guadalajara, is Mexico’s second city, and Puerto Vallarta is among the nation’s landmark coastal resorts.

The 33-year-old from Doncaster set off from Puerto Vallarta on 25 March and hopes to reach Osaka in early June to avoid Japan's typhoon season.

While this phenomenon is not brand new—quake-driven rooftop pool waterfalls have been caught on camera in Manila, Puerto Vallarta, and Taipei in recent years—it’s increasingly frequent.
