The five most popular apples remain Gala, Red Delicious, Granny Smith, Fuji and Honeycrisp, but new varietals, like Ambrosia, Envy and Cosmic Crisp, are gaining popularity.

Biting into a Red Delicious is always a major gamble because oftentimes, you'll be anticipating a nice juicy chomp, only to fill your mouth with mushy, brown-hued bits of fruit.

India bought mostly Red Delicious apples, a varietal whose popularity has declined domestically.

But here’s a comparison that’s straight Red Delicious to Red Not So Delicious: the Blue Jays became an expansion franchise the same year as the Mariners — 1977 — and won their first World Series in 1992.

A New York Times headline the next year, on Aug. 29, 2018, was positively jubilant at the downfall: “The long, monstrous reign of the Red Delicious apple is ending.”
