Radiy Khabirov, the head of Russia’s Bashkiria region, near Kazakhstan, said a drone hit the Neftekhim Salavat oil refinery, one of the country’s largest, around midday on Thursday, sending plumes of smoke into the sky.

Salavat Yulaev Ufa expressed sorrow for the death of Koltsov, who won a Gagarin Cup championship with the club as a player in 2010-11.

Koltsov served as an assistant coach for Salavat Yulaev Ufa the past two seasons.

Koltsov retired from playing in 2016 and was assistant coach with Russia Kontinental Hockey League side Salavat Yulaev Ufa.

Videos showed police lining Salavat Yulaev square in the city centre and herding protesters away.
