Sarg, whose mastery in carving wooden bow ties and jewelry can be viewed on Instagram or in person at Salon Benders in Long Beach, told me the swirling patterns of cork oak bark on the tree remind her of Vincent van Gogh’s “Starry Night.”

“I would like to be more like a cork oak,” Sarg says, “protecting myself while still remaining soft on the outside.”
