“We saw videos on social media of people being detained really aggressively by what looked to be both masked and armed ICE agents and others that were in full military gear,” said Orange County Supervisor Vincent Sarmiento.

Mr Sarmiento said he hoped Francis' successor would maintain the Catholic Church's openness to diversity.

And his influences included writers who worked in that tradition: writers and essayists such as Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, Jorge Luis Borges and Euclides Da Cunha.

“Lucy Barriga created this program for women specifically,” observed Olga Lucía Sarmiento, a public health researcher and leading scholar of Ciclovía.
