That all but came to an end Tuesday, when Fred Segal shut its two remaining L.A.-area clothing stores: its West Hollywood flagship on Sunset Boulevard and its Malibu location.

The marquee name first appeared in 1961, when Fred Segal opened a small shop in West Hollywood, which grew into a cultural touchstone interwoven into the identity of Los Angeles.

It can be purchased through various retailers including Fred Segal Home, and there’s a limited edition of eight available.

“Based on an early read, we think this strikes a good balance,” says Allen Segal, chief strategy and public affairs officer for the American Society for Microbiology, which had concerns about regulatory overreach.
