It has been trying to restore the woodlands by introducing downy birch, sessile oak, hazel, willow, aspen and alder as well as endangered tree species such as Arran whitebeam.

To assemble the data set, research teams looked at about 20 trees from each of the dozen tree species, which included maritime pine, Norway spruce, sessile oak, stone pine, and European beech.

When French President Emmanuel Macron came to Washington in April last year for his first state visit, he and President Donald Trump planted a European sessile oak tree on the South Lawn of the White House.

“The roof I’m assuming is oak and there’s plenty of oak available, including sessile oak which is long, straight-stemmed oak trees that they will need for these sort of projects,” he said.

The tree, a European sessile oak, came from the site of the Battle of Belleau Wood, which took place in the summer of 1918.
