“Simon Says reminds me of why I love nightlife, and it’s definitely an incentive to pull out my sewing machine,” Arvizu says.

“Mostly women sit there at sewing machines all day doing very, very tedious work. ... If this is what he thinks these tariffs will do, it’s not going to work that way.”

He and his staff responded by finding a local tailor and a second-hand sewing machine, and establishing a workshop right inside the rehab facility — using spandex instead of the usual material.

“I made the costumes in the middle of our dining room on my mother’s Singer sewing machine,” he says.

The buildings have been hollowed out to make way for sewing machines, rolls of fabric and bags brimming with cloth scraps.
